Furnace repair
What usually goes wrong
Most furnace calls come down to a short list: a dirty flame sensor, a failed igniter, a clogged filter that trips a limit switch, a blower motor or capacitor, or a control board. A technician can test each one and tell you what failed and what it costs before replacing anything.
Before you call, check three things: that the thermostat is set to heat and above room temperature, that the furnace switch (it looks like a light switch near the unit) is on, and that the filter isn't packed with dust. If all three are fine, it's time for a technician.
If you smell gas or your carbon monoxide alarm goes off, leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 first.
