What usually goes wrong
Heat pumps are common in newer homes across Franklin, Cumberland and Adams counties. In cold weather it's normal for the outdoor unit to frost and defrost on its own; it's not normal for it to stay encased in ice, or for the system to run constantly while the house stays cool.
A heat pump that can't keep up often switches to auxiliary electric heat, which works but costs much more to run. If your electric bill jumped and the 'aux' or 'emergency heat' light is on a lot, have the system checked: common causes are a failed defrost control, low refrigerant or a reversing valve problem.
